What moves the Singapore dollar

The Singapore dollar behaves a little differently from most currencies. Rather than setting interest rates, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) uses the exchange rate itself as its main policy tool, steering the SGD within an undisclosed band against a basket of its major trading partners' currencies. That makes the SGD one of the more stable and resilient currencies in Asia. As a result, the KRW-to-SGD rate often swings more because of the won side, such as broad US dollar strength or won weakness, than because of anything happening in Singapore.

Turning a won budget into Singapore dollars

To size up a budget, just divide: won amount ÷ rate = Singapore dollars. If 1 SGD sits around 1,000 won, for example, then 100,000 won is roughly 100 SGD and 1,000,000 won is about 1,000 SGD. The figure shown here is the mid-market (interbank) rate, so real card payments and cash exchange add a spread and fees on top. It is safer to pad your travel budget by a few percent above the on-screen number.

Paying in near-cashless Singapore

Singapore is one of the most cashless places in the world; most shops, taxis and even many hawker centre stalls take contactless cards or mobile payments. Even so, a few older hawker stalls and wet markets are cash-only, so a little cash in small notes (S$2, S$5, S$10) comes in handy. When a card terminal asks whether to charge you in Korean won, always choose to pay in the local currency (SGD); picking won (dynamic currency conversion) applies the merchant's own poor rate. Keep in mind Singapore adds 9% GST, and purchases above a threshold can qualify for a tourist refund when you fly out of Changi.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same rate my bank or card will actually use?

No. This tool shows the mid-market reference rate published by the Export-Import Bank of Korea. Bank exchange and overseas card payments add a spread and fees on top, so you will pay a bit more in practice. Airport kiosks and cash exchange carry the widest spreads, so the gap there can be larger.

Do I need to carry cash in Singapore?

For most things, cards and mobile payments are enough; trains, buses, convenience stores, restaurants and taxis nearly all take contactless. That said, some hawker stalls and small shops still prefer cash, so exchanging a small amount is plenty.

How often does the rate update?

It refreshes once per business day, from the reference rate published around 11 a.m. Korean time. On weekends and holidays there is no new quote, so the previous business day's value stays in place, with the reference date shown on screen. That means the number will not keep changing throughout the day.
