The cup-to-liter formula

To convert US cups to liters, multiply the number of cups by 0.236588. Because one US cup is 236.588 mL and a liter is 1000 mL, one cup equals 0.236588 L. So 4 cups is 0.946352 L, close to a full liter; 10 cups is 2.36588 L; and half a cup is 0.118294 L. Going the other way, one liter is about 4.227 cups. There is a decimal involved, but it is still a single multiplication.

When liters are the better unit

For large volumes like soup, stock, or punch, liters are more intuitive than counting cups. If a US recipe calls for 8 cups of water, you instantly know you need roughly a 1.9 L pot. People who track daily water intake in cups can total it in liters to compare against a goal such as 2 L. Reference points and a subtle catch

Memorize 4 cups ≈ 0.95 L (nearly 1 L) and, in reverse, 1 L ≈ 4.23 cups. Eight cups is about 1.89 L, a bit under 2 liters. The catch again is the type of cup. This calculation assumes the US cup (0.236588 L), so the same '5 cups' is 1.18 L in US cups but only 1.0 L with a 200 mL cup. The error grows with volume, so always confirm the recipe uses US cups.
