kg to tonnes formula
Since one tonne is 1000 kilograms, converting kilograms to tonnes means dividing the kg value by 1000. For example, 3500 kg is 3500 ÷ 1000 = 3.5 t, and 250 kg is 0.25 t. A big number like 45000 kg comes out simply as 45000 ÷ 1000 = 45 t. The math is clean because the metric tonne itself is defined as 1000 kg. Just think of division (kg → t) as the exact inverse of multiplication (t → kg).
When you actually need this
Scales usually read out in kilograms, but shipping, disposal, and purchase prices are billed per tonne, so a conversion is needed. If you collect scrap metal or waste paper and sell it by the kilogram at a per-tonne rate, you convert total kg into tonnes to work out the payout. When moving house, people estimate the total load in kilograms and then pick a tonne-rated truck (1 t, 2.5 t, 5 t). Farmers tally a harvest in kilograms and match it to the tonne figures on a shipping contract. And a forklift or freight-elevator load rating given in kilograms often has to map onto tonne-class equipment categories.
Reference points and a gotcha
Using '1000 kg = 1 t', just shift the decimal point of the kg value three places to the left (e.g., 8200 kg → 8.2 t). Values under a tonne become decimal tonnes, so don't be thrown when 900 kg turns into 0.9 t. A frequent mistake is multiplying when you should divide: kg → t is always a division by 1000. Also, the tonne here is the international standard metric tonne (1000 kg), which differs from the US short ton (about 907.18 kg) and the British long ton (about 1016 kg), so always check which tonne a foreign trade document means.
Frequently asked questions
How many tonnes is 1000 kg?
1000 kg is exactly 1 tonne. Divide the kg value by 1000 to get tonnes.
How many tonnes is 500 kg?
500 ÷ 1000 = 0.5 t. Anything under 1000 kg shows as a decimal tonne below 1.
Do I multiply or divide to convert kg to tonnes?
You divide by 1000. Converting tonnes to kg multiplies by 1000, so going the other way from kg to tonnes divides by 1000.
