Reference points and a gotcha

Using '1000 kg = 1 t', just shift the decimal point of the kg value three places to the left (e.g., 8200 kg → 8.2 t). Values under a tonne become decimal tonnes, so don't be thrown when 900 kg turns into 0.9 t. A frequent mistake is multiplying when you should divide: kg → t is always a division by 1000. Also, the tonne here is the international standard metric tonne (1000 kg), which differs from the US short ton (about 907.18 kg) and the British long ton (about 1016 kg), so always check which tonne a foreign trade document means.
